Recently, some sellers producers have started making decent-quality straight copies of rare or now-expensive games (such as SNES Earthbound).

Usually these exist only to scam a buyer.

They're not legal according to copyright, but the community doesn't hate them because they're not straight fakes of things that actually exist, and sellers are not misrepresenting them as authentic.īootleg: When the community says "bootleg", they usually mean "straight (or janky) copy of a legit cart". Nearly always, it's one of:Īn unreleased game, such as a prototype that never made it to market but was later discoveredĪ game that was never sold in the target region (possibly translated, which would make it also a ROM hack, but possibly not) It most often means an altered ROM loaded on a cart, sold by someone who is not lying about what it is. Reproduction: This word is a misnomer, really, but it has taken hold. But doing the exact same thing now, is considered perfectly ok and acceptable. The older it is, the more likely it is to be considered Bootleg and Pirate. It's just something I can't seem to understand. Yet the older ones are considered bootleg/pirate, but doing it nowadays is considered "Reproductions".why? Reproductions aren't new, that's pretty much what most bootleg/pirate games are to begin with, and we've seen how long those have been around. So why is one made to sound bad, and one made to sound like an innocent rom hack? But the exact same thing being made nowadays, would be considered a rom hack. Such as the countless games where someone just changed the main character sprite to Mario, and called it "Mario 65 Advanced Battle" or something stupid. Plenty of games are considered Bootleg/Pirate games. This isn't really just an NES topic, but I've seen a lot more bootleg/pirate games on NES compared to other systems, so this is where I'm asking.
